Today, we are going to look at what is meant by the term B2C or B2B.
In its simplest terms, B2C stands for Business to Consumer, and B2B stands for Business to Business.
But let’s look at what it means in more detail…
Business to consumer refers to companies who sell directly to the general public. High street businesses in other words like shops, restaurants, beauty and hair salons are all clear examples. But equally most health professionals are also B2C.
The way they market their business and communicate with their customers will be quite different from companies who only work with other businesses.
Business to business covers companies who sell to other companies. Strong examples of this would be consultancy firms, office suppliers, some IT provision – but this covers a wide range of services and products that can be quite diverse.
Companies that are part of a supply chain, even if the end product is sold to a consumer, are in the business to business market – for example car components.
The term B2G also appears on occasion and refers to business selling to government.
There are also, of course, companies that sell to both consumers and business – obvious examples are professional services such as accountants, banks, solicitors.
That said, many now believe that there should be no distinction between B2B and B2C and it all should be called Human to Human.
We agree, that in every instance you are communicating and persuading a human being, and there are plenty of opportunities to make the most of this.
There is now a strong move to engage with every customer in a more emotional way, with storytelling – and that can be hugely effective.
However, you do still need to understand that selling to a member of the general public is different to selling to a business – the buying process for one, is distinctly different.
